The Amazing Spider-Man 2: Actress Shailene Woodley finally explains why her Mary Jane Watson debut was completely deleted

According to a recent interview, Shailene Woodley opened up about her time on The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Specifically, the actress discussed her highly anticipated casting as Mary Jane Watson. Furthermore, she revealed exactly how it felt when the studio completely cut her from the superhero movie.

During a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter (via MCU Film News), Woodley explained that playing the iconic Marvel character was a major personal dream. Because Spider-Man was a massive property, she was incredibly excited to join the franchise. As a result, she committed fully to bringing the beloved character to life.

The Tragic Fate of Mary Jane

However, things quickly changed for the young star. Ultimately, the filmmakers decided to eliminate her character from The Amazing Spider-Man 2 to streamline the plot.

“They were like, ‘Let’s wait for Gwen Stacy to die, and then we’ll introduce Mary Jane’,” Woodley revealed. Because the studio wanted to focus heavily on Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, introducing a new love interest felt extremely complicated. Therefore, they planned to save her highly anticipated debut for the third movie.

Unfortunately, that highly anticipated sequel never happened. Consequently, Woodley’s version of Mary Jane Watson never saw the light of day.

“But then they didn’t make that film. So, there was no reintroduction,” the actress concluded.

I've been in love with Marvel since I watched Iron Man 2 in the theaters. Since 2010, I started reading, watching, playing, and discussing everything involving Marvel. The love was so deep that I always wanted to share it with other people, and that's why I created Legado da Marvel in 2017.
